Blog #17 | Progressing Forward
Hello! It’s been a while since you have last heard from us, we have been busy working hard to rapidly build and test each subsystem on our rocket. Although the Space Port America Cup has been unfortunately postponed until next June, we are still pushing to complete our designs and make an awesome rocket. These new designs are improvements to those made in previous years. Here’s a quick summary of what our teams are doing:
· Our Payload and Recovery team is planning to put a 360° VR cameras in the payload section of the rocket. This should provide a very cool view once the rocket leaves the launch pad! Users will be able to control the motion of the camera from a VR headset, and the camera will match their movements.
· Avionics still leads development of inflight solutions to the control of our oxidizer flow. They plan to do that by using small CO2 cartridges to actuate the pneumatic valves in the flow path.
· Frame has been testing and developing small exploding bolts that will aid in the release of the nose cone and parachute deployment.
· Propulsion is currently in the process of getting Banshee engine components manufactured, with the goal of attempting a hot fire very soon.
All engineering teams have been working extremely hard to try to finish their respective sections, and we have seen major improvements with our engineering research and design techniques this year. This is a crucial step in the progression of UNH SEDS which will enable us to continue to build bigger and better things! Also, SEDS just hosted their elections for new leadership next year, good luck to all who ran for positions!
UNH SEDS is participating in the annual 603 Challenge held by UNH. If you have not heard of this challenge, it is a massive giving opportunity where you can make easy donations to UNH SEDS that will be directly matched by a donation from the prize pool of over $200,000. Today marks the NH Numbers Challenge, where any donation containing any combination of the numbers 6, 0, and 3 will be automatically matched with a $50 donation. The 603 Challenge ends tomorrow April 13th. Thank you all for your help!
