Blog #18 | An Unexpected Journey

While this has certainly been an unusual year for us at UNH SEDS, we wanted to take some time to talk about what we’ve done this year and what’s to come in the upcoming semester! Despite the odd situation that COVID brought to all of us, it didn’t stop us from continuing to improve our rocket’s design to be more robust, reliable, and optimized going forward.

Our propulsion team developed a brand new swirl injection system and redesigned the engine to add more features like insulation along the sides of the combustion chamber. The frame team redesigned the internal rocket structure to better fit the needs of what each component needed to do and incorporated a standard coupler system to join each rocket section together. Avionics worked on designing a compact flow regulation system and further developed the launch control module to run on one programming language. Our newly added payload and recovery team created our very first rocket payload which is a 2-axis self-stabilizing camera connecting to a live VR headset as well as developing the 2-staged parachute deployment rigging.

As far as current events go, we’ll be sending our seniors off later this week as they graduate and move to working in industry. We’ve also recently transitioned to our new leadership for the upcoming year, and we are doing our best to get in a hotfire engine test soon so we can see how all of our new designs perform!

Look forward to more blog updates in the coming year!
